Kat Looking to Muscle In After Brands GP

Katharine Impey competed in the MSV Formula 3 Cup last weekend, 16-17th July, at the very popular Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit in Kent. A full grid of 36 F3 cars entered, Kat had plenty of competition. In official Friday practice, Kat was running very competitive pace, especially not knowing the circuit. However things weren't exactly going to plan, two wheel failures, mean't valuable track time was lost.

On Saturday, Kat knew she had to pull something out of the bag, not knowing the track, with limited running on the Friday practice. It was a difficult session for Kat, she was fast but was finding it difficult to get a clear lap, with slower traffic spread out on the tight Brands GP track. Kat managed P5 in qualifying.

In the first race on Saturday, Impey had great race pace, and quickly became one of the fastest cars on track. Working her way up to P4 on the opening lap and building up a comfortable gap from the chasing 32 cars behind her. Kat crossed the line to finish P4.

On the Sunday, qualifying was very similar to the day before. Hot, dry conditions, fighting for space to do the ultimate qualifying lap. Kat worked with her team mate Mark Terry, taking it in turns to following each other, slip streaming each other to try gain the ultimate lap. By the end on the timed session, Kat qualified P4.

In the second race, Kat had a great start, almost up to P2 before her team mate Mark, muscled his way back through at the first turn. So she slotted in behind him and was running P3 for a while. However as she started to struggle with muscle fatigue, she started falling back in to last years F3 champion Chris Needham. Kat under great pressure, eventually lost P3 and P4. Kat had a comfortable gap from the rest of the chasing pack adn was running P5 for the remaining laps of the race.

After the race Impey said “I’m pleased with my overall race pace. However I need to spend a little more time down the gym to build up some more upper body strength. As it showed this weekend, that was my biggest weakness”.
