Difficult Wet Weekend at Brands for Kat
Katharine Impey competed in the MSV Formula 3 Cup last weekend, 16-17th
July, at the Brands Hatch Indy circuit in Kent. In official Friday practice
things were looking good for Impey as she was running P2, against the
other competitors times.
On Saturday, the conditions were vastly different to the warm, dry track
on Friday. Minutes before qualifying, the heavens opened. The car was
up on the stands, having a wet compound tyre fitted to it. The team were
limited on what they could change on the set of the car, due to how little
time was remaining before the start of qualifying. It was a difficult
session for Impey, as the radical dry set up, which was still on her
car, was quickly becoming an underlining issue throughout the session.
This resulted in a poor P9 grid slot.
In the first race on Saturday, Impey had great race pace, and quickly
became one of the fastest cars on track. Working her way up the order,
with some ballsy, determined moves, She finished P4. Robbed of a podium
finish, as the race was prematurely finished due to an incident.
In the
second race on Sunday, Impey again was fast, in the wet conditions. She
was quickly repeating her performance from the previous race. Moving
up the order, Impey went for a brave move around the outside of turn
one, Paddock Hill bend. After it looking like she had got another position
in the bag, she had a tap at the rear right wheel from her competitor.
This unfortunately sent them both off in to the gravel, where they both
stayed for the remaining laps of the race.
After the race Impey said “I’m obviously disappointed overall
with this weekend. I had good pace throughout testing and the races,
but after a poor qualifying, it was always going to be a difficult come
back”.
